Academic Advising
How do I find out who my academic advisor is and how I can contact him/her?
You can find a listing of all of the Huizenga School Academic advisors along with their contact information here.
When should I see my academic advisor?
In order to be successful in your academic career, it is essential to stay informed, plan effectively, and engage in proactive, positive decision-making and problem-solving. Your academic advisor is here to help!
Academic advising is a partnership between student and academic advisor, and includes shared decision-making and responsibility. Make sure to meet with your academic advisor regularly to ensure that you are on the right track.
How do I schedule an appointment with my academic advisor?
You can schedule an appointment with your academic advisor online. You can find the online advising calendar here. You can also contact the Office of Academic Advising at 954-262-5067 or 1-800-541-6682, ext. 25067.
What is the difference between a walk-in appointment and a scheduled appointment?
Appointments allow students to meet with their academic advisor during a specified time for an individual advising session at a time convenient to you. Students with busy schedules and/or multiple questions are encouraged to schedule an appointment.
Walk-in (or call-in) advising is intended for brief interactions lasting 10 minutes or so. Walk-ins are “first come, first serve” and, depending on student traffic, may involve a wait. Please note that some “quick questions” require research or discussion, and may be more appropriate for an advising appointment.

How do I know what courses I need to take?
You will want to use your course catalog and curriculum sheet to determine program and degree requirements. The current catalog can be found here. Past catalogs can be found in the HSPortal. Curriculum sheets are received from your academic advisor during your first semester at NSU. If you do not have a copy of your curriculum sheet, contact your academic advisor.
What is a prerequisite and why do I need it?
A pre-requisite is a course that must be completed prior to the course in question. Prerequisite courses are important to develop a strong foundation in a content area for subsequent study. For a list of prerequisites, consult the catalog or curriculum sheet.
Graduate Students: There are two types of prerequisite classes for graduate students. Some programs require certain undergraduate courses which must be taken prior to its graduate counterpart. Prerequisites may also be graduate-level courses that are required to be taken before other graduate courses.
How do I search for classes?
You should use the Schedule of Classes to search for classes.

How do I register for classes?

I tried to register, but I have a hold. Why?
Students may incur holds for a variety of reasons, including missing documentation, an outstanding balance, or an issue regarding your academic status. To review your holds, go to www.webstar.nova.edu, select the “Student Financial Services and Registration” then “Student Records.”
What are the registration deadlines?
Registration deadlines for Doctoral, Masters, and Undergraduate students can be found here.
What are late registration fees?
The late registration period follows the normal registration period. During the late registration period, students who have not yet registered for the term may register through WebSTAR and/or their academic advisor; however, a late fee will be added to their account.
What if I change my mind about taking a class?
Before the start of the term, you can make changes to your schedule without financial or academic consequences. Once the term has started, you will have financial obligations; these vary depending on when you submit your request to drop or withdraw from the course. In addition, depending on when you drop/withdraw, there may be implications for your academic progress and/or standing. Please consult the catalog for refund and grading schedule.
How do I drop a class?
Undergraduate students should email their academic advisor though their NSU email account their drop request.
Graduate students should fill out the Master/Doctoral Drop Form found in the HSPortal in the My Classes module.

How do I sign up for an NSU e-mail account?
Your NSU Email Name is created automatically once you’ve been accepted to NSU. To retrieve your NSU Email Name and password, you can go to http://www.nova.edu/sharklinkid/. You can optionally enable e-mail forwarding by going to www.nova.edu/common-lib/docs/emailfwd.html. Please note, that with certain email systems this has been known to cause emails to be lost. If you believe you are not receiving all of your email, disable email forwarding. Your e-mail username and password will serve a number of purposes. Not only will you use them to access your WebMail account (mail.nova.edu), but you will also use them to log into the HSPortal) and WebCT (webct.nova.edu).
How do I get a receipt for my classes?
You can print out a listing of all tuition charges by logging into WebSTAR (www.webstar.nova.edu). However, if you need an itemized receipt, you can request one from the Bursar’s Office by contacting them at 954-262-5200 or 800-541-6682 x25200.
How do I access my online class?
You can access your online course in WebCT (webct.nova.edu/). Your ID and password for WebCT are the same as for your NSU e-mail account. Your classes will not show up in WebCT until the first day of the semester. While there is no specific requirement that you log in this first day, it is strongly encouraged so that you can get a head start on your class. Each semester, the first time you attempt to access an online class, you must take and complete a WebCT quiz. The quiz does not have anything to do with your specific class but rather is a test to see if you are familiar with the mechanics of the WebCT environment. You must pass the quiz with 100% success before you can access your course, but you can take the quiz an unlimited number of times. If you have never used WebCT or have never taken an online class, it is strongly recommended that you explore some of the tutorials available on the WebCT home page.
Where can I get a report card?
You can print an official grade report from inside WebSTAR (www.webstar.nova.edu). Please note that you will have to follow the instructions listed in WebSTAR to enable the printing of background images and colors.
Who do I contact if I’m experiencing technical difficulty with NSU systems or programs?

Where do I find my syllabus?
Before you register for classes, you can access an abbreviated syllabus for any class in the Huizenga Schedule of Classes. Once you’ve registered for your classes, you can access a full syllabus in the “My Classes” module inside the HS Portal. Your ID and password for HS Portal are the same as for your NSU e-mail account. Please keep in mind, however, that there is always a chance you may receive an addendum to your syllabus, during the first class meeting. This addendum could include possible additions or corrections to the course schedule and/or content.
How do I find out what books I need for my classes and where do I order them?
You can find out what books are required for your courses by consulting the abbreviated syllabus in the Schedule of Classes system (www.huizenga.nova.edu/ScheduleOfClasses) before you register or, once you’ve registered for your classes, you can find the information in your full syllabus in the My Classes module inside the HS Portal. You can order your books through the NSU bookstore (www.nsubooks.bkstore.com/). If you decide to order your books through somewhere other than the NSU bookstore, make sure that you order the correct edition of your books. The easiest way to ensure this is to make sure that the ISBN number on your book(s) matches what is listed in your syllabus.
