John Polstein is Chief Executive Officer of Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, a division of Kaplan, Inc., and the nation’s oldest and largest provider of test preparation and admissions services. Appointed in 1998, Polstein has played a primary management role in the company’s transformation into the $2.1 billion educational services company it is today. He has grown the company to twice the size of its competitor, maintaining consistent growth each year. Spearheading the test prep division, admissions consulting and online programs, he has established the company as a leading provider of educational services to K-12 schools. Polstein introduced programs for law and medical program admissions exams in the UK, and has acquired new operations in Australia and Israel. In addition, he has expanded the company’s book and software publishing division and initiated growth overseas.
Previously held positions within the company include overseeing test prep centers and helping to standardize and streamline operations around the country. When Polstein joined Kaplan in 1992, he served as the Director of Pre-College Programs, then moved into field management, running the Manhattan test prep center (the country’s largest) followed by advancement to roles of Regional Director and Regional Vice President overseeing the Northeast region. Polstein received his B.A. from Amherst College and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He is an active member of the board of directors of Reading Is Fundamental, a national non-profit literacy organization.
Kaplan, Inc., publishes more than 190 book and software titles, provides test preparation for more than 90 standardized exams, and operates centers in 19 countries outside the U.S. Its K12 Learning Services group works with hundreds of school districts nationwide to improve student performance on state tests, enabling students to pursue higher education.
About The Distinguished Lecture Series
The Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) was established by Dean Randolph A. Pohlman to inspire students by giving them a glimpse into the minds of successful and outstanding entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Distinguished lecturers articulate lessons learned and provide insight into our often complex business world. Students and the business community benefit from discussions ranging from business ethics to the practical application of academic theory. The general format of the DLS is a presentation, followed by questions and answers, or our speaker may simply "tell their story" and allow our audience to pose questions thereafter.
Initially created for students, the DLS has grown to include undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, business leaders and distinguished members of our community.
Our past distinguished lecturers include: Jack Welch, Larry Bossidy, The Honorable Clarence Thomas, Robert L. Johnson, Alan Potamkin, Ronald Bergeron, Stephen A. Ross, Ph.D., and H. Wayne Huizenga (recipient of Ernst and Young's 2005 World Entrepreneur of the Year).
Copies of these lectures are available to faculty members, for instructional use in the classroom. Interested faculty should contact the HSBE Technical Helpdesk at 954.262.5059.
High profile entrepreneurs and business leaders interested in participating as a Distinguished Lecture Series speaker should contact the
Office of Development at (954) 262-5065.
