Franchise Mini MBA™
This series of highly interactive franchise education and training programs provides many practical benefits for franchisors. You will participate in senior-level franchisor training, discussions, and activities. The Franchise Mini MBA™ is a series of three stand-alone learning programs designed to help franchise leaders develop and enhance their capacity to take on 21st century franchise challenges. Programs are not sequential, and participants may take individual programs or the series of programs. Do you have to take all of the programs in the Franchise Mini MBA™ series?
The Franchise Mini MBA™ programs, Leading Innovation and Organizational Change, Franchise Development, and Strategic Management and Strategy Formulation are stand-alone programs. You may register for individual programs or the series of programs. The programs are NOT sequential so if you want to attend the entire series, you may attend in the order that works best for you. However, you can save money by registering for the entire series, as long as you take the programs within the calendar year.

Mario Altiery is the founder and president of Upside Group, a full-service franchise consultancy that provides franchisors with comprehensive solutions including marketing, sales, development, day-to-day operations, strategic planning and crisis control.
Mario has owned his own franchises, been president of a successful franchise system, and helped many franchisors develop their systems in numerous industries.
Cheryl R. Babcock, CFE, CFE, is the director of the International Institute for Franchise Education in the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University and the executive director of the International Society of Franchising. She designs and develops franchising and entrepreneurship programs and has taught courses on franchising and entrepreneurship in Australia, Brazil, Finland, France, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the U.S. She serves on the IFA Educational Foundation Board of Trustees and the Institute for Certified Franchise Executives Board of Governors. She is co-author of Franchise Times Guide to Selecting, Buying & Owning a Franchise.
In 2008, she received the IFA Women Franchise Committee’s Crystal Compass Award for exemplary leadership; the Edwin M. Appel Prize from the Price-Babson College Fellows Program for "bringing entrepreneurial vitality to academe" and was named by Franchise Times as one of “20 to Watch” in both 2001 and 2004. The IFA honored her in 2003 with their prestigious Free Enterprise Award, honoring her work in strengthening and fostering the development of the free enterprise system; and also in 2000 for the franchise research and education initiatives of the Institute for Franchise Management that she founded and directed.
Barry Barnes, Ph.D. is a professor and Chair of Leadership in the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University where he has been teaching graduate-level courses since May 1997. He teaches Strategic Decision Making and Organizational Behavior in the Doctoral program and Leading Change at the Masters level. Recently, Dr. Barnes has taught students in Germany, China, Brazil and Jamaica as well as at numerous locations around the U.S. His recent research and writing focus on the innovative business practices of the legendary rock bank the Grateful Dead.
Barry works to create a “community of learning” in his classes where students learn from each other as well as from him. Two principles he applies to this end are responsiveness to students and continual improvement of his teaching process. He works toward energizing and involving students to shift the learning process from passive-dependent to active-experiential. Moreover, he challenges students to stretch and work to their fullest capabilities. His goal is for students to understand and apply the management theories and concepts presented, not merely memorize them. Barry frequently draws on his 20-year business experience to accomplish these goals.
Amy Cheng is a founding member of Cheng Cohen LLC. She concentrates her practice in franchise, licensing and distribution law and general corporate, mergers and acquisitions. Amy has extensive experience in reviewing, structuring and drafting agreements for franchise, licensing and distribution relationships and in regulatory compliance. Amy combines her corporate and franchise experience to provide comprehensive legal services to franchise systems. Prior to forming Cheng Cohen LLC, Amy was a partner with DLA Piper US LLP.
Amy has spoken at many conferences and seminars sponsored by the American Bar Association Forum on Franchising and the International Franchise Association. Amy co-chairs the Chicago Chapter of the IFA’s Women’s Franchise Network and previously co-chaired the Chicago Chapter of the IFA’s Franchise Business Network. For her work in the franchise area, Amy was recently named again as a “Legal Eagle” by the Franchise Times.
William H. Edwards, CFE, president and senior partner of Edwards Global Services, Inc. (EGS), has more than 30 years of international operations, project management, development, executive and entrepreneurial experience in the oil & gas, management consulting and licensing sectors. He has lived in seven countries and worked on projects in 62 countries. He co-founded the AlphaGraphics' master licenses in China and Eastern Europe and directed AlphaGraphics, Inc.'s network growth from four to 24 countries. Previously, he had a 20-year oil and gas sector career. EGS assists companies to realize their full international market potential.
Michael J. Evers, Ph.D., is dean emeritus and professor of strategic management in the College of Business at the University of St. Thomas (UST). As dean of the Graduate School of Business at UST from 1984 to 1995, he was responsible for six graduate programs totaling 3,000 students and nine centers offering non-credit programs. He has taught graduate, undergraduate and non-credit courses in management, organizational behavior and design, strategy formulation and implementation, and logistics and distribution systems.
Prior to his academic career, he held managerial positions at Rockwell International, McDonnell Douglas, National Distribution Services, and Emerson Electric.
Lorne M. Fisher serves as the CEO/Managing Partner of Fish Consulting, a national communications consulting company focused on creating public relations and marketing strategies that deliver measurable business results for its clients.
For more than 15 years, Lorne has worked in communications on both the agency and corporate side. This experience has been invaluable in providing Lorne with an understanding of the unique needs and challenges each side faces every day. This understanding allows him to provide insightful counsel to clients and employees to help them succeed.
George Heenan is currently Chairman and CEO of Excelsius Partners Ltd., a strategic planning and corporate governance consulting organization. George serves on a number of public and private board of directors and advisory boards. He is the former director of the Institute for Strategic Management (ISM) at the University of St. Thomas (UST) and serves as an executive fellow for the UST College of Business. Throughout his career, George has held management, executive and senior officer positions in a number of start-up, emerging-growth, and Fortune 500 companies. He is a frequent speaker, and co-authors a monthly column on strategic management for Minnesota Business. He has served as an expert witness in the area of corporate governance.
George began his career with Honeywell Inc.’s Aero Division as a physicist, engineer and program manager working on Mercury, Gemini and Apollo manned space programs. He moved to Medtronic Inc., in 1970, holding a number of executive positions including senior vice president, research/new ventures; product development; operations and vice president of manufacturing. In 1980, he joined Control Data to serve as corporate vice president of product and applications strategy. In addition, he also held the position of vice-president-strategic plans and programs for the Computer Systems and Services Division. George continued his career leading a number of start-up and emerging-growth companies. He also served as president of Medical Industrial Capital, a venture capital firm specializing in early stage medical companies.
Lynette McKee, CFE, is the vice president of Franchising for Dunkin' Brands, Inc. She is the former vice president, U.S. Franchising for Burger King Corporation. In her role there, she was the principle point of contact with the franchise community on all matters relating to the development of new and existing franchise restaurants.
She is the former vice president of Franchise Development for Metromedia Restaurant Group, the parent for Bennigan's Grill and Tavern, Steak and Ale, Ponderosa and Bonanza Steakhouse restaurant chains. She was responsible for all franchise growth for all concepts. During the last six years, Lynette was directly involved with the Bennigan's seed market program, where the concept sold several company Bennigan's restaurants to franchisees along with multi-unit development agreements to grow the Bennigan's brand. She also had responsibility for this program with the Ponderosa Steakhouse brand and directs the growth plans through the non-traditional avenues with airports, military locations, college campuses, parks and arenas. She serves on the IFA Minority Committee and the Women's Committee.
Robert C. Preziosi, D.P.A., professor of Management Education in the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University, was named "Professor of the Decade" in 2000. In 1997, he received the Huizenga School's first "Excellence in Teaching Award." The American Society for Training and Development has presented him with the Outstanding Contribution to HRD Award, and he has twice received the "Torch Award," the first time ASTD has given a second Torch Award to one individual.
He has been vice president of Management Development and Training for a Fortune 50 company, and worked as a human resources director, line manager, business school dean and leadership training administrator. He has a B.A. in social science, an M.Ed. in educational psychology, and received his doctorate in management. He has been widely published in various national publications, including Training and Development, National Productivity Review, The Teaching Professor, and Quality Review.
Brian B. Schnell is a partner with Faegre & Benson, LLP. The firm offers clients more than 475 lawyers in a full range of practice groups, with experience handling legal matters throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Brian focuses his practice in franchising and product distribution law. He represents and counsels both emerging and mature franchisors in a variety of industries with regard to all aspects of their franchise programs. He is the lead corporate franchise lawyer for dozens of franchisors, ranging from companies with thousands of locations worldwide to companies who are in the initial stages of building their franchise systems.
Brian is a past chair of the International Franchise Association's Supplier Forum and a member of its Legal/Legislative and Membership Committees. He is a highly rated and well-regarded speaker and author on topics in franchising.
Brian is a very effective franchise lawyer, as he combines his legal experience with a passion and keen understanding of franchising to find practical solutions for clients. His experience is based on approximately 20 years of working closely with clients and getting to know them and their businesses, goals and objectives. He listens, asks questions, and works hard to find solutions or approaches that work for clients.
Christopher Simnick, CFE has over 25 years of experience at many levels of franchising and has held numerous positions. His people, sales, support, operations and management style have allowed him to put together, train and build franchise development, sales and support teams that are respected throughout franchising, and has equipped him with the skills, knowledge, and experience that very few franchise executives have the opportunity to acquire.
He has had the privilege of having been part of the successful growth of six fantastic franchise systems, four bricks and mortar and two home-based concepts. All are number one in their respective industries, with a total of over 2500 franchisees. In addition, all are international, and in as many as three dozen counties.
Chris has several years of direct international experience, which includes helping launch one of the systems in the United Kingdom as Director, and working with Master Franchisees from around the world.
Chris has completed the Fast Track M.B.A. Training in Franchise Management through the International Institute for Franchise Education at Nova Southeastern University, and he received his CFE designation in 2004. He has taught and spoken at numerous events on domestic and international development sales processes, the use of the Internet as an effective lead generation and sales tool, and other various aspects of franchising.
Accommodations
Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Florida, programs take place in the Carl DeSantis Building at Nova Southeastern University, H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship. Information will be provided to you prior to the start of the program pertaining to the appropriate room number, parking information, directions, etc.
Hotel information will be provided to participants when they register for a course. When making your hotel accommodations, you must identify yourself as a NSU IIFE program participant and reserve your room 30 days before the program starts to assure special rates and available space.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
We realize that occasionally you need to cancel your registration. You can substitute another individual in your place at any time prior to the first day of a program. If you wish to receive a refund or credit toward a future IIFE program, the following applies: cancellations received 30 days before a program begins will be issued a refund, less a $150.00 processing fee. Cancellations received six to 29 days prior to the start of a program will get 50 percent of the registration fee refunded.
We are sorry that we cannot provide a refund or credit if we receive your written cancellation in five or fewer business days before the start of the program.
Earn up to 1,350 CFE Education Credits
The Institute of Certified Franchise Executives has approved each individual module in the Franchise Mini MBA™ series for 450 CFE Education Credits. Earn up to 1,350 CFE Education Credits by completing all three modules — Leading Innovation and Organizational Change, Franchise Development, and Strategic Management & Strategy Formulation.
$200.00 of the registration fee for each module goes to the Institute of Certified Franchise Executives. We notify the ICFE after the program and tell them who attended.
