Instructor
Barry Barnes, Ph.D., a professor at the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, has taught a variety of courses in both the MBA and doctoral programs including Strategic Planning, Delivering Superior Customer Value, and Organizational Behavior. Recently, Dr Barnes has taught students in Brazil, China, Germany, and Jamaica as well as at numerous locations around the U.S. His recent research and writing focus on the innovative business practices of the legendary rock band the Grateful Dead.
Before entering the academic world, Dr. Barnes worked in "the real world" for 20 years in Kansas City, mostly in information technology. He started his management and IT career with IBM in 1968, and he later spent 12 years with John Deere. He was also an IT consultant and has owned three small businesses.
Dr. Barnes aims to create a "learning culture" in his classes. Two principles he applies to this end are responsiveness to students and continual improvement in his teaching process. He works toward energizing and involving students to shift the learning process from passive-dependent to active-experiential. Moreover, he challenges students to stretch and work to their fullest capabilities. His goal is for students to understand and apply the management theories and concepts presented, not merely memorize them. He frequently draws on his 20-year business experience to accomplish these goals.
Dr. Barnes taught at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) for two years. He completed his Ph.D. in Business at the University of Kansas in 1996, and he earned both an MBA and BBA from the University of Missouri in the early 1980s.
