Huizenga Business School Hosts 600 Walgreens Employees
On January 24, the Huizenga Business School hosted more than 600 Walgreens employees—including store managers, pharmacy managers and supervisors, district managers, operation trainers, and loss prevention supervisors—for their Market Meeting. The meeting was held in the Miniaci Theatre and included a kick-off presentation given by John Riggs, Assistant Professor of Marketing, titled “Getting Beyond Mediocrity—Personal and Collective Accountability.” Professor Riggs motivated the audience by combining theoretical management principles with his personal experiences and humor. Meeting organizers surprised the audience with special guest appearances by Dan Marino and Joe Rose, former Miami Dolphins players. Marino recognized top Walgreens fundraisers by throwing an autographed football to each. In addition, Walgreens also highlighted a story about a little boy named Jace Tacher, a 3-year-old who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 2. Last year, Jace’s family formed “Team Jace” and participated in the Walk With Walgreens event, recruiting over 50 friends to join their team and raising more than $5,000. “We owe Walgreens of South Florida a tremendous amount of thanks for all they are doing to raise much needed funds for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). With their help, we know the DRI will find a cure for Jace and the millions of children like him that are affected by diabetes,” said Jace’s parents. Jace and his parents were recognized on stage by Walgreens VP of Store Operations, Roy Ripak, and were presented with thank you cards in a frame made by children from across the United States. Walgreens has been a corporate partner with the Huizenga Business School since 2009. |

MBA and Real Estate Development Grad Instrumental In $161 Million Deal
The OMNI & Hilton Downtown in Miami has been acquired by a real estate joint-venture of leading investors formed to acquire the distressed senior mortgage. 2009 MBA+RED graduate, Brad Williamson an executive at Tate Capital, played an integral role getting the deal across the goal line. Brad was instrumental in underwriting, structuring, and the due diligence process that resulted in the successful purchase of the property’s senior mortgage. To understand this complex transaction – nearly 1.5 million square feet of retail, office, parking and event space anchored by a 527 room Hilton Hotel – Brad built a multivariate financial model to analyze a myriad of options that helped the investors and their investment banks structure the financing and close the complex transaction within a tight time frame. In working on this $100 million plus deal Brad noted that the “NSU Real Estate program enabled me to maximize my financial analysis skills and development knowledge on this project by successfully evaluating a mixed use project with multiple future uses.” Previous to his role at Tate Capital, Brad worked at GE Capital Real Estate as an Associate Director where he participated in the financing of over $750 million of commercial real estate throughout the United States. Brad said that enrolling in the Huizenga School’s Real Estate Program “enabled me to be a vital team player for both a Fortune 500 company while in school and following graduation to join a leading private investment firm and further my success in the commercial real estate industry.” Press Information about the Omni Center transaction is available here. |

Business School Professors Present Research at Management Conference
Two professors from NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship—Randi L. Sims, Ph.D., Professor of Management and Cynthia P. Ruppel, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Information Technology—teamed up with Peter Zeidler, director of advanced business analytics at TeleTech, to present their research at the Southwest Academy of Management Annual Conference. The conference was held in Houston, Texas on March 11, 2011. The group’s co-authored research was titled "Country as a Moderator in the Relationship between Work Stress, Job Satisfaction, and Intention to Turnover.” Their study considered the attitudes of 395 full-time employees working in manufacturing and call center companies in China, India, and the Philippines. Their findings indicate that the country moderates the relationship between work stress, job satisfaction, and intention to turnover. Implications for future research and management practices are discussed in their paper. The topic of work stress and how it impacts employee outcomes has been an important area of study within Western management research. With an increasingly global labor market, researchers and managers alike have begun to focus attention on the extent to which traditional Western management theories, measures, and practices translate well to developing economies. |

The program’s curriculum and admission process are now more rigorous. According to the article, the program’s primary focus is on the development process rather than real estate, which makes it unique compared to most schools offering a real estate degree.
