ECN 3010 - Intermediate Macroeconomics


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course expands upon the tools of economic analysis covered in Principles of Macroeconomics. An overview of current macroeconomics events is followed by an in-depth study of the methodologies used to predict economic activity. Prerequisites: ECN 2025.

II. PREREQUISITES
( ECN 2025 OR ECON 2025 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
1)        Understand the forces that have shaped the U.S., European and Asian economies in recent years.
2)        Articulate the notions of the short-run, medium-run and long-run.
3)        Describe the basics of National Income Accounting.
4)        Discuss the concept of equilibrium in the goods market and in financial markets and derive the basic IS-LM model used to study short-run movements in output.
5)        Explain the concept of equilibrium in labor markets and the natural rate of unemployment in the medium-run.
6)        Develop the Aggregate Demand-Aggregate Supply model used to entice Hall the long-run.
7)        Develop a model of economic growth focusing on the determinants of capital accumulation and technological progress and the role of each in growth.
8)        Discuss the role of expectations in economic decision making hence output and employment in both the short and medium-run.
9)        Explain the implication of more open economies on exchange rates.
10)        Articulate the goals and objectives of fiscal and monetary policies and explain their limits in macroeconomic policy.
11)        Describe the evolution of macroeconomic policy over the past 50 years and discuss current directions in research.
