MGT 3050 - Organization Theory


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Emphasizes the structure of modern organizations and systems. The special problems of complex organizations, project and/or program management, matrix management, venture management, and contingency management will be discussed. Prerequisite: MGT 2050

II. PREREQUISITES
( MGT 2050 OR MGMT 2050 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
1)        Apply open system methodologies to understand the types of goals organizations pursue and some of the competitive strategies managers develop to reach those goals.
2)        Develop a framework for assessing environments and examining how organizations respond to them through structural design and the search for information and resources.
3)        Explore the nature of organizational technologies and the relationship between technology and structure in manufacturing and service organizations.
4)        Examine the life cycle stages of organizations with an emphasis on the structures, internal systems and management issues associated with each stage of development.
5)        Review contemporary approaches to organization design that enable organizations to compete effectively in a global environment and achieve competitive advantage in domestic markets.
6)        Appreciate the role of information technology in gaining a competitive advantage by improving responsiveness, output quality, and freeing employees for thoughtful work.
7)        Explore how organizational and culture provides a sense of collective identity to achieve internal integration of the workforce and adapt to the external environment.
8)        Identify the characteristic of learning organizations that engage in solving problems and continuously experiment, improve and increase their competitive potential.
