FINP 5008 - Business Finance


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
A survey of the essentials of finance and its environment. Financial management as it applies to organizations, ratio analysis, leverage, working capital management, capital budgeting, capital structure, and other concepts as they apply to business organizations. Course satisfies program prerequisite of finance for master's degree programs.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Entrance Competencies

The student should be able to:

1) Understand and apply the Balance Sheet Model of the firm and the basics of accounting.
2) Understand how accounting transactions impact the financial statements of the firm.
3) Understand basic statistical concepts such as mean, median, variance, standard deviation, correlation, and, apply basic probability models to conditions of uncertainty.
4) Understand how the macroeconomy impacts firm behavior and managerial actions.
5) Access course materials online.
6) Search for information on the World Wide Web.

Exit Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1) Construct and analyze the financial statements of corporations.
2) Calculate and interpret financial statistics acquired through analysis or from financial sources.
3) Conduct basic financial analysis such as ratio and trend analyses.
4) Calculate present values, future values, and/or required returns from a series of cash flows.
5) Construct and interpret discounted cash flow models used to value assets.
6) Understand and employ basic working capital management models.
7) Discuss the goal of the firm and agency relationships and how these concepts apply to the financial decision making process.
