MGT 5012 - 21st Century Management Practices


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will gain an understanding of leading state-of-the-art business theories and will be able to apply them to real-world situations. They will learn to understand and challenge the ideas of 20th century management thinkers, and to practice developing and challenging their own theoretical and applied models and paradigms.

Entrance Competencies

Students will be expected to have general knowledge of the following issues and ideas:

1) The names and ideas of historic management theorists and practitioners.
2) Current business issues and events, and the activities of modern business leaders.
3) The growing role of market-based economies, and the increasing globalization of management and business.
4) The importance of the role of organizations in society.

Exit Competencies

The student will be able to:

1) Identify and use the management practices that are required to maximize value over time (VOT) in a new millennium, and to allow an organization to compete effectively in the global marketplace.
2) Understand the philosophy and premises of market-based management, and Value Driven Management, including an understanding of the role of values, the process of value creation, and the use of the process of Value Driven Management.
3) Appreciate the relevance of historic management theorists and practitioners to the 21st century practice of management.
4) Have a working knowledge of traditional organizations, and the management practices that were utilized in such organizations.
5) Be able to use analytic-thinking skills in evaluating management methods and practices, current literature in the management field, and contemporary management models and theories.
6) Be able to apply basic management concepts using the case-study method.
7) Understand both experientially and intellectually the uses and limitations of team-based management.
8) Appreciate the philosophy and methods of graduate education for adult learners, and the power of education in creating both personal and organizational value over time.
9) Make effective use of organizational and analytic decision-making skills in the context of Value Driven Management.
10) Think about values in concrete and specific ways.
