MGT 5090 - Entrepreneurial and Strategic Thinking


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will gain a well-developed understanding of business enterprises and the entrepreneurial and strategic thinking that drives them in a dynamic, competitive regional, national, and global economy. Students will learn to apply entrepreneurial and strategic management practices (e.g., using case analysis) to organizations of varying sizes. Prerequisites: FINP 5008 or equivalent, HRM 5030, MKT 5070, and QNT 5040.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Entrance Competencies:

Students should have a working knowledge of the core business functions of human resource management, purchasing operations, marketing, and finance, and the basic economic, technological, political, legal and sociological environments of the global business enterprise. Students should have developed the ability to communicate effectively both orally, and in writing.

Exit Competencies:

The student who has successfully mastered the material contained in GMP 5090 will have a well developed understanding of single and multi business enterprises, and a thorough understanding of the entrepreneurial and strategic thinking that drives these enterprises in dynamic competitive regional, national and global economies.

This student will also be able to apply strategic management techniques to include Value Driven Management (VDM), portfolio management, value chain analysis and environmental analyses to better plan for the future of their enterprises.

Course Objectives:

1) To contribute to the student's inventory of strategic planning and problem solving skills through cross-functional, team-based case analyses.
2) To school students in the creativity and innovation necessary to recognize and develop new venture opportunities, and to include plans and programs necessary to turn new venture opportunities into profitable businesses.
3) To conduct industry and competitor analyses in light of the internal and external stakeholders' beliefs and values, and to demonstrate how stakeholder beliefs and values influence the activities of the enterprise.
