ISM 5113 - Managing Information Systems


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to enhance understanding of use of data, information, and processing technology in managerial decision-making. It serves as an introduction to the fundamental of information systems concepts and techniques. The primary focus is to bridge the gap between business needs and information systems solutions through an understanding of the interconnections between technology-based information systems and the organization. Prerequisite: ISM 5103.

( GMP 5103 OR ISM 5103 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Entrance Competencies

It is expected that all the students are computer literate, and are familiar with microcomputer operations and current Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint) software.

Exit Competencies

Upon course completion, students will be able to:

1) Discuss the emerging trends in the use of management information technology in the management decision-making process.
2) Understand how information technology is used in building business strategies to create a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
3) Analyze information processing needs of the organization or department and recommend computer system requirements.
4) Explain the systems approach and apply it to problem solving and decision support.
5) Compare and contrast how companies gain competitive advantage by using expert systems, decision support systems, group decision support systems, and executive information systems.
6) Understand how information systems support global business strategies.

The concepts, theory and examples will be introduced in a group discussion/seminar environment where participation is essential. The introduction of actual experiences by all participants will be encouraged. Case studies and group projects will be utilized to incorporate other examples that illustrate the appropriate concepts.
