HRMP 5200 - Introductory Human Resource Management


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
A survey course to acquaint students with the major policies and procedures dealing with the Human Resources activities in most organizations. The course is designed to provide an overview of several major functions in human resources. Topics include staffing, recruitment, performance evaluation, development, compensation, labor relations, and safety. Techniques for improving the legal impact will be integrated throughout the course. Some consideration to international HRM will also be given.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
A. Entrance Competencies

Through prior studies and work experiences, students should be familiar with the following concepts:

1) Social and biological foundations of human behavior.
2) Library research using secondary data sources.
3) The changing nature of organizations.

B. Exit Competencies

By the end of this course the student will have a working knowledge of and be able to:

1) Define human resource management.
2) Discuss the activities involved in planning for, attracting, selecting, developing, maintaining, and evaluating a quality workforce.
3) Discuss the influence of the complex legal environment and various employee laws on human resource management.
4) Discuss the effects of globalization on HR functions.
5) Identify and explain key steps in the unionization process.
6) Explain the role of training and development in the human resource management process, and discuss alternative methods of training and development.
7) Discuss the strategic role of HR in management.
