HRM 5260 - Employee Relations


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
An in-depth examination of labor relations, covering collective bargaining, contract negotiation, contract administration, mediation, arbitration, and other types of dispute resolution case problems based on actual situations that are utilized to acquaint students with union-management relations. Prerequisite: HRMP 5200 or equivalent.

II. PREREQUISITES
( GMPF 5200 OR HRMP 5200 OR GMP 5030 OR HRM 5030 OR MGMT 4160 OR HRM 4160 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
A. Entrance Competencies:

All students must have completed HRMP 5200, Human Resource Management (or its equivalent) and have working knowledge of:

1) Human resource practices.
2) Human resource organization structure.
3) Employer obligations and employee responsibilities.
4) Techniques of human resources and organizational development.
5) Management control of human resources that involve promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions, and termination and under what conditions these occur.

B. Exit Competencies:

At the end of HRM 5260, the student will

1) Know employees relations terminology as applied to individual work settings.
2) Know labor-employment relations laws that affect the relationship of employer and employee.
3) Discuss the meaning of unions and how they operate.
4) Assess the administration of ADR processes.
5) Evaluate the administration of adverse action processes.
6) Design a plan for the championing and protecting of employee rights.
7) Compare/contrast performance management systems and tying rewards to organizational performance.
8) Develop employee relations policies and procedures in employee governance.
