PUB 5451 - Managing Information and Technology in the Public Sector


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will gain an overview of the key issues and challenges involved with managing projects involving hardware, software, and telecommunications; data warehousing and data mining systems; systems development and implementation; and end-user computing. The emphasis is to assist students with the tools and techniques to be able to manage information as a resource and to use it to help transform public sector organizations and promote innovative best practices.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Recognize the importance of information as a resource in the public sector.
2) Determine methods to manage information strategically.
3) Explain the key privacy and information security issues in the public sector.
4) Discuss the challenges associated with acquiring technology solutions, hardware, software, and services in public agencies.
5) Identify effective approaches to develop, manage, and implement information systems.
6) Describe the basics of the major technologies that support the management of information to enable improved communications with information systems professionals.
7) Demonstrate an ability to use information to transform administrative and public policy decisions and to promote innovation.
