PUB 5477 - Public-Sector Statistical Analysis

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students gain an overview of the commonly used statistics and research methods in public administration including descriptive statistics, statistical distributions, probability, hypothesis development and testing, correlation, contingency table analysis, and regression. Research design, measurement strategy, data collection, data analysis, and reporting results are discussed. A broad range of quantitative and qualitative methods are covered in order to provide the analytical tools necessary to examine the myriad public sector issues. Prerequisite: QNTP 5002 or equivalent.

II. PREREQUISITES
( GMPF 5002 OR QNTP 5002 OR MATH 3020 OR BUSS 4610 OR QNT 4610 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Identify the elements of decision making under uncertainty, decision rules, sensitivity analysis, and how statistical data may add value to decision making.
2) Explain the relation of confidence intervals to hypothesis tests, do tests of hypotheses for population means and variances; one-tailed and two-tailed confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, measures to control for Type I and Type II errors and their probabilities of occurrence.
3) Identify conditions requiring the use of the t-test, chi-square test, and F-test; types of ANOVA designs.
4) Calculate and interpret the coefficients of simple regression.
5) Discuss the differences between simple and multiple correlation and regression analysis and correctly interpret a computerized solution.
6) Identify conditions requiring the use of nonparametric methods.
7) Demonstrate an ability to use quantitative techniques for managerial decision making by solving assigned homework or case problems.
