LED 5651 - Cross Cultural Leadership

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
In a rapidly changing world, leaders risk failing to attain their goals and those of their organizations unless they recognize the dynamics of cross-cultural communication. They must also understand how cultural forces influence many aspects of the leadership phenomenon. As part of this course, participants will analyze various theoretical frameworks to help them identify culture's effect on attitudes and behaviors, as well as on approaches to ethics, motivational practices, negotiation patterns, strategic decision making, and change. Participants will also develop practical skills that will contribute to the effectiveness and success of their organizations. Case studies and experiential exercises will be used to support learning. Prerequisite: MGT 5020 and LED 5630.

II. PREREQUISITES
( MGT 5020 )
AND ( LED 5630 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Entrance Competencies

Before enrolling in the course, students should:

1)        Recognize that globalization trends demand culturally-intelligent leaders;
2)        Expect to be challenged on their cultural assumptions in order to identify and evaluate the norms driving their conditioned world-view;
3)        Be willing to develop (or expand) their cultural perspective;
4)        Understand that effective cross-cultural leadership relies on the development of self-awareness and self-monitoring skills;
5)        Understand that cultural facts are dynamic and ever-shifting, which means that developing a global mind-set will not rely on prescriptive formulas but on the ability to identify patterns of behavior and respond to them flexibly;
6)        Be aware that the cultural generalizations discussed in class should serve and always be considered as an average guideline.

Exit Competencies

Upon completion of this course, the student will have an increased capacity to:

1)        Understand that cultural norms and practices exist on a continuum, where no one practice is better than another, but simply offers a different perspective on the same issue;
2)        Recognize and correctly identify the factors affecting cross-cultural communication as compiled by various authors;
3)        Analyze and understand the underlying assumptions of cultural norms, and evaluate the implication they have on leadership and followers;
4)        Analyze and understand the role of generational approaches in changing cultural perspectives and behaviors;
5)        Recognize and evaluate the effect of cultural models on attitudes and behaviors, as well as on approaches to ethics, motivational practices, negotiation patterns, strategic decision making, and change;
6)        Analyze and evaluate theoretical frameworks and key cultural theories in order to develop a practical approach to implementing successful organizational and strategic practices and procedures cross-culturally;
7)        Demonstrate cross-cultural proficiency in experiential exercises and simulations.
