LED 5660 - Situational Leadership: Theory and Practice


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides a behavioral science background for the development of current leadership theory. Beginning with organizational research in the early 20th century, the course reviews the landmark theories and research that have paved the way for our current understanding of such concepts as motivation, management and leadership. The course will also emphasize the theory and practice of the Situational Leadership Model by Hersey and Blanchard which emerged from the earlier behavioral science theories. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate their own leadership style through self-and-peer-assessment and improve their ability to adjust their style to match the needs of those they attempt to influence. Prerequisites: MGT 5020 and LED 5630.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Entrance Competencies

As students begin this course they bring with them knowledge and experience from other graduate level study included but not limited to the following:

1) Assessment skills for determining the ethics of a variety of business situations.
2) Knowledge of individual, group and organization behavior that leaders bring to effective organizations.
3) The ability to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate human resource policies/procedures.

Exit Competencies

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

1) Identify several important behavioral science pioneers and their theories which continue to influence management thought in the 21st century
2) Discuss the role of behavioral science in the development of leadership theory.
3) Describe the concept of follower readiness.
4) Identify the elements of follower readiness.
5) Explain the process of diagnosing follower readiness.
6) Describe the concept of leadership style.
7) Describe their own preferred leadership style.
8) Recognize the importance of matching leadership style with follower readiness.
