I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of state and local taxation. The course is not intended to make the student technically proficient in all areas of state and local taxation, but rather, it surveys the taxes that states generally impose on its citizens, corporations, and other entities. The impact on society of current and proposed state and local taxes will be explored through the study of assigned readings and in-depth class discussions. Prerequisite: TXX 5762.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
Entrance CompetenciesAll students must have completed at least two terms of Intermediate Accounting, one term of Cost Accounting, and one term of Advanced Accounting. This course assumes that all of the studetns are competent in both Financial and Managerial Accounting concepts and procedures. Exit Competencies Students will have: 1) An understanding of the various state and local income tax regimes. 2) An understanding of the various state tax treatments of limited liability companies and partnerships. 3) An understanding of the various state tax treatments of C and S corporations. 4) An understanding of state tax policies concerning apportionment of income. 5) An understanding of state tax policies concerning net operating losses. 6) An understanding of the various state tax treatments of estates and trusts. 7) An understanding of the various state and local tax treatments of tangible and intangible property. 8) An understanding of the various state sales and use tax regimes.
