INB 5822 - Globalization and Emerging Markets


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course offers a comprehensive analysis of emerging markets including but not limited to the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). This course identifies issues germane to developing markets as they integrate into global economy. The conceptual framework used in this course covers three perspectives: multinational firms from developed countries seeking to tap into the vast potential of emerging markets; entrepreneurs and multinationals from emerging markets seeking to develop global, world-class organizations and global investors seeking to profit from opportunities in emerging markets. The course will build on pervious understanding of legal, cultural, political, and other environmental differences across countries to offer insights into evaluating risk and strategy in emerging markets. Prerequisites: ECN 5806.

II. PREREQUISITES
( ECN 5806 OR GMP 5806 )

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course has three main objectives. First, students will learn how to evaluate the unique environments of these emerging markets, particularly assessing the risk involved in operating in these countries. Second, students will analyze how multinational firms can successfully compete in these markets. Finally, students will analyze the emergence of multinational firms from emerging markets and how they can successfully compete against established firms from developed countries.

Entrance Competencies:

It is expected that through prior undergraduate or graduate courses students will already be familiar with the major concepts and theories of management in terms of the following:

1)        Students will have a basic understanding of world events, politics, and macroeconomics.
2)        Students will have an understanding of international trade and investment theory
3)        Students will have an understanding of the political economy of international business

Exit Competencies:

By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1)        Evaluate the unique environmental and institutional contexts of emerging markets
2)        Evaluate role of geography and resources in shaping competition in emerging markets.
3)        Evaluate and account for risk in emerging markets
4)        Design strategy and business models for firms doing business in emerging markets
5)        Design strategy and business models for firms from emerging markets
6)        Apply concepts of corporate social responsibility in emerging markets
