MGT 6020 - Emerging Issues in Organizational Behavior & Human Resource Management


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
A seminar in the theories and practices of organizational behavior and the techniques of applied management. Focus on individual and group behavior in organizations. Discussion of traditional behavioral theories, organizational dynamics, current trends, and future directions in behavioral sciences and human resource management fields to include concepts of team-building practices and high-performance perception and values. Responsibilities of human resource management and skills of applied management practices in the organization to include survey research and employee motivation, leadership, workplace trends, and personnel planning. Cases and experiential exercises will enhance the transfer of learning. Prerequisites: Graduate level organizational behavior and human resource management.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
A. ENTRANCE COMPETENCIES:

It is expected that all students, through a combination of previous graduate course work and/or professional work experience, are familiar with the following.
1) Organizational Behavior: perception, cognition and attribution theories; motivation, communication, group and team dynamics, adult and collective learning, leadership theory and practice, and cross-cultural management;
2) Human Resources Management practices, functions and processes; integrative strategic HR planning, job analysis, employee selection and selection test validation processes; career development and mentoring; performance and reward systems; globalization of HR operations, and legal and ethical guidelines.

B. EXIT COMPETENCIES:

As a core course in the HSBE DBA program, MGT 6020 is designed so that at its completion, students will be able to:

1) Articulate a personal professional philosophy regarding OB and HRM practice, based on your beliefs and values, in workplace and/or in classroom environments.
2) Communicate verbally or in writing about current trends and future directions of OB and HRM both theoretically and in the workplace.
3) Apply a working knowledge of personality, perception, attributions and values in OB and HRM and be able to apply them to interactions at work, in the classroom as well as to HR processes, e.g., selecting and appraising employees and instructors.
4) Describe the best practices and legal implications of core HR practices such as selection, socialization, career development, management development and learning, performance assessment and feedback and retaining valued employees.
5) Discuss the contributions of ethical and social responsibility by individuals and organizations whether planning strategically or implementing planning operationally.
6) Demonstrate HR practices as a series of interrelated processes designed to manifest the organization's mission and to support organizational effectiveness and desired outcomes.
7) Identify the key issues in cross cultural management relating to OB and HRM issues, including the social construction of different cultural mores and expectations in the context of rapidly changing business environments.
8) Conduct doctoral level research in terms of a review of the literature for building a foundation for publications and dissertation research using a doctoral level writing style resembling that of peer reviewed journal articles.
