INB 6460 - Seminar in Global Strategy


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Seminar in Global Strategy: This course introduces the student to the concepts of Global Strategy. The course covers the following major topic areas: multinationals and national markets, national competitiveness; multinational competition and cooperation, knowledge in the multinational, international mergers and acquisitions and international entrepreneurship. Within these course modules, we will examine the dynamic between the multinational and nation-state, and the constraints and impetuses which drive business globally. Emphasis will be placed on examining entrepreneurial and innovative strategies for succeeding globally. Prerequisite: INB 6110.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) The importance of the theoretical bases for global strategy, and current research directions, and the convergence of the fields of strategic management and international business.
2) The issue of national competitiveness and consequent political ramifications.
3) The importance of understanding and dealing with the unique aspects and problems involved in international business, in particular cross-border entry modes, and cross-border performance.
4) The drivers of cross-border diversification strategy.
5) A clear understanding of MNE international growth strategies, such as mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances and joint ventures.
6) An understanding of contemporary emerging market companies and their internationalization strategies.
7) A beginning knowledge of the issue of subsidiary-headquarters relations.

      • Seminar in Global Strategy consists of journal articles drawn from some of the leading journals in the field. The student can access these via the electronic library or directly from the journal website in some cases. Some papers that are difficult to obtain without membership, such as Academy of Management journals, will be loaded on the HSBEPortal under shared name rclarke. See below under each session for the articles to prepare for each day.

    The APA Manual is a recommended textbook for all courses.
    Effective July 1st 2009, the 6th edition of the APA Manual is recommended for all courses.
