MKT 6810 - Seminar in Marketing Theory


I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to prepare D.B.A. candidates in marketing for the dissertation by providing them with the skills to develop theory within a marketing context. The students will be exposed to a structured theory development procedure and will complete a theory development paper. In addition, students will read and critique works in the field. Prerequisite: Graduate-level marketing.

III. LEARNING OUTCOMES
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. To provide the student with a broad exposure to the methods of inquiry and knowledge development.
2. To understand the role of theory in providing a framework and direction for the development of the marketing discipline.
3. To review and evaluate the classic and contemporary foundation literature of the marketing discipline.
4. To explore related inter-disciplinary contributions to the marketing literature.
5. To assess the current state of the marketing discipline.
6. To assess the contribution of competing paradigms to development of marketing knowledge.
7. To identify the process of knowledge development and dissemination in the marketing discipline as well as the impediments to this process.
8. To review and formatively evaluate important topics and works conventionally associated with the field of Marketing.

Exit Competencies:

1. Student should be able to critically evaluate empirical research, including identifying the theory and nomological linkages in the research model.
2. Students will be able to write a propositional paper (suitable for publication at an academic conference) based on logical arguments and propositions developed from theory and the literature.
3. Students will be able to understand the process of theory development and testing.   
4. Students will be able to differentiate and make linkages among: general laws, bridge laws, and research hypotheses.
